Experience stories carved in marble.

BOOK YOUR EXPERIENCE

27-29 SEPT

Carrara and Pietrasanta

Follow the veins of marble, a material that has spanned centuries and civilisations, traversing artistic trends and disciplines without ever losing its appeal.

This living material, inseparably linked to Carrara and the surrounding area, can be discovered in an Experience that conveys all its splendour through stories of marble workers, sculptural techniques, quarries and artists’ studios.

THE GUIDE

FILIPPO TINCOLINI

An artist, sculptor and educator based in Carrara, Filippo Tincolini is the founder of the TorArt sculpture workshop and the guide who will accompany you throughout the Experience. His work explores the solutions offered by new technologies, without disregarding the lessons of classical and traditional sculpture. His creations have featured in national and international exhibitions in established galleries and important art institutions.

IN FABIO VIALE’S PRIVATE QUARRY

FABIO VIALE

You will visit the Cava del Falco, owned by contemporary sculptor Fabio Viale, who is responsible for restoring the quarry lake and its ecosystem. After meeting the artist, you will have a unique opportunity to board his work Aghalla (2002), a small floating boat carved from a single block of marble.

CAVA MICHELANGELO

DINNER UNDER THE STARS

For one night, the Cava Michelangelo will host an exclusive event dedicated to Treccani Esperienze guests: you will take your seat at a dinner inside the quarry, resplendent and still under the starry sky, accompanied by a musical performance.

On the slopes of Monte Altissimo

In 1821, Jean Baptiste Henraux reclaimed the marble quarry on Monte Altissimo from which Michelangelo had obtained the blocks for San Lorenzo church: since then, Henraux has established itself as a leading company in marble processing and in the enhancement of its heritage. On a tour of the factory and to the Foundation, you will discover the marble-working process and applications in art and architecture.

Sculpture: tradition and innovation

Marble, a blend of tradition and innovation: at the TorArt workshop in Carrara, a company specialising in sculpture and design, technology and creativity go hand in hand. Together with Filippo Tincolini, you will see ROBOTOR anthropomorphic robots at work, used for the most demanding processing stages, and you will be able to admire a vast exhibition area with reproductions of the greatest sculptures of the past.

Cave Michelangelo art studios

A date with history awaits you in the Bacino del Polvaccio, the place where Michelangelo chose the blocks for the Pietà and for the Tomb of Pope Julius II, still frequented today by artists such as Jan Fabre and Maurizio Cattelan. At the Cava Michelangelo, you will visit the workshops where the area’s young sculptors are trained. This is where marble in its raw, inert state is brought to life.

Fonderia Artistica Versiliese

The Fonderia Artistica Versiliese was established in 1975 thanks to Gino Lucarini, a master craftsman trained in Pietrasanta, and his passion for bronze. Accompanied by an expert, you will visit the casting department to learn how sculptures and design elements are created using the lost wax casting method, starting with the processing of metals and other materials.

Stay in Pietrasanta

During the Experience you will stay in the beautiful Pietrasanta, which over the years has become a centre for artists and artistic experimentation, welcoming the likes of Fernando Botero and Igor Mitoraj. In this open-air museum, you can lose yourself among art galleries, boutiques and wine bars.
