THE PARENTESI
The Brion Memorial
Commissioned to the architect Carlo Scarpa by Onorina Tomasin after the death of her husband Giuseppe Brion in 1969, the Brion Memorial is a funeral monument that stands in San Vito di Altivole. It houses the tombs of the two spouses, conceived by Scarpa within an architectural complex of different buildings, in dialogue with green spaces and bodies of water that evoke Middle Eastern and Japanese gardens. In 2022, the Brion Memorial was donated to the FAI – “Fondo per l'Ambiente italiano” (The National Trust of Italy) by Donatella and Ennio Brion.
Carlo Scarpa's architecture
In the Brion Memorial, Carlo Scarpa gives rise to his idea of architecture, giving life to an example of the modernist language in which the suggestions of the Venetian and Byzantine artistic tradition, classical art and oriental philosophy are combined with the elegant use of reinforced concrete, mosaic and wood. The celebration of eternal love pervades the entire complex, emblematically represented by the meeting of two circles, a symbol of the union of two entities into a single soul and a Western translation of the dialogue between Yin and Yang.
