THE PARENTESI
The Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore
Founded in 1319 by St. Bernard Tolomei, the monastic complex of Monte Oliveto Maggiore dominates the ridge of a hill in the area of the Crete Senesi. Ever since the monastic community has lived according to the Benedictine Rule, taking care of agricultural activity which with its cultivated fields, vineyards and olive trees has contributed over the centuries to enriching the surrounding area.
Art, spirituality and nature
A monk will guide you through the environments of the Abbey: from the monumental Renaissance library at the monastic refectory, where the meal is accompanied by sacred readings; from the wall-paintings by Sodoma and Luca Signorelli in the Great Cloister to the treasures kept in the chapter house; up to the cellar, part of the centuries-old agricultural activity.
Tasting in the cellar
Historical sources testify the presence of an agricultural activity since 1319, specifically the one related to the cultivation of vines. Your visit will end in the historic cellar of the abbey complex, where you can taste four different types of wine, produced in the respect for nature without sacrificing the highest levels of quality of Tuscan wines.
